The Holland Police Department in conjunction with the Springfield Township Fire Department will be conducting a Safety Town program this summer for  students who are entering kindergarten in the fall. The students are introduced to a variety of safety topics. Each day a resource person from the community speaks with the students on many issues including police, animal safety, medical safety, fire prevention, electrical safety, water safety, emergency medical safety, train safety and bus safety.

Safety Town will be held in two different sessions. The program will be held at the Crissey Elementary School, 9220 Geiser Road June 16-27, 2008. Class times include your choice of a  morning session, 9:00 am to 11:30 am, or an afternoon session, 1:00 pm to 3:30pm. Snacks are served, but not lunch. There are no fees associated with the program.

Holloway Elementary School, 6611Pilliod Road,  will host the second session of Safety Town July 7-18, 2008. Class times include your choice of a  morning session, 9:00am to 11:30 am, or an afternoon session, 1:00 pm to 3:30pm. Snacks are served, but not lunch. There are no fees associated with the program.

The program is broken into four classroom sessions; red room, yellow room, green room and the actual Safety Town, which is a miniature model outline of a small city with painted streets, sidewalks, buildings, and uses stop signs, red lights, and crosswalks. the Safety Town session is outside.

  • The Red Room emphasizes basic safety concepts through games, songs and books.
  • The Yellow Room reinforces the day's topic through "hands on" art activities.
  • The Green Room is where the children work with the police officers to learn about safe driving and pedestrian skills on our miniature city model.

A community resource person will visit and give an overview of the days safety lessons, offering hands on learning through touring real working safety vehicles, taking a bus ride, or having their arm set in a cast.

This program will assist the children, who have not been away from home, in preparation for the upcoming school year. It will familiarize them with people they may come in contact with outside the home. For most children this will be their first time on their own.
